Make a Digital Statement with WordPress
If you like the site design, here’s the chance to own it. The design was inspired by Digital Inspiration, and the theme is built on the Statement theme, resulting in Digital Statement. The theme makes extensive use of plugins, and requires setup and use of custom fields before everything will fall into place.
Updates 15-11-2008
The download now is version 1.10 with the following major improvements:
- Auto Thumbnail generation
- Fancy Zoom for thumbnail links in content area
- Tested on WP 2.6.3, IE 6, 7, FF3, Chrome, and Opera
Setup
- Activate all plugins in the package.
- To setup twitter, go to http://twitter.com/badges/html, copy the javascript to footer.php, replacing line 57 – 58.
- For the Featured Post to work, follow this article. Basically you need to edit gallery.php, and change line 14 ’showposts=5&cat=X’ to to your featured cat id. You need at least 2 post in the category before the post will show.
- Create a “gallery_image” key custom field for the Featured Content image thumbnail.
- Create a “Image” key custom field for the post thumbnail. If none is defined, then the first image in the post will be used as thumbnail. If none of the above mention is available, then a default thumbnail image will be shown. You need to define the full image path on line 10 of index.php and line 14 of search.php. For more on the thumbnail generation, check here.
- For the login box to appear in the top sliding panel, you need to go to Admin > Settings > Membership > and check the “Anyone can register“.
- To display the “About” on the sidebar, your admin email will need to be associated with gravatar, and fill up the “Biographical Info” in the Admin > Users.
- Finally, setup flickrRSS to link to your flickr account. Set to display 10 square images from flick. For the 11th image, it is a custom setup which you can edit in footer.php on line 16.
I hope I didn’t miss out anything, but should you need any help, feel free to drop in the comments. Otherwise you can check out this and this.
Hope this will prove useful for you. A link back or acknowledgment will be must appreciated. If you have tweaked it or made any improvements to the theme, I will love to hear about it.
Just a word of caution, there are customization to some of the plugins. Upgrade at your own risk.

Update – 10/11/08: Digital Statement is now the official Version 2.0 of the Statement Theme, and this has given me the motivation to implement the improvements to the theme, namely IE6 fix, auto thumbnail generation, and just to confirm it works in WP 2.6.3, before the impending WP 2.7 release. Hope to get it done soon, and it will be uploaded for sharing in due course.

hello there neowster.
I’m having problem with the featured post function
The image won’t appear for me.
Sometimes while loading it does exist but after that the image will dissapear.
Would you mind to take a look at http://www.beautifulnara.com
Thanks
October 19th, 2008 at 10:29 am
You will need a minimum of 2 featured items in order for the gallery to work. I faced exactly this problem and got my answer from original author.
October 19th, 2008 at 11:31 am
Hi Noel,
Thanks for the quick reply and the solution.
I did what u said and it worked.
However I’ve got another problem which is the footer won’t expand like yours.
(If you take a look at the site,you’ll understand the situation).
I tried to tweak by deleting the flickrss and editing the css but it didnt do me any good.
Care to comment?
October 19th, 2008 at 7:55 pm
Hi Nazu,
From what I see, you placed the div# footbg inside the div#wrapper. It should be outside of the #wrapper, as the #wrapper is preventing it from going 100% width.
Additionally, you might want to open header.php and go to line 130 to remove the list item of “Album” from your navigation menu. It was my mistake leaving it behind.
Finally, for the sliding panel on the top to show the login box, you need to go to Admin > Settings > Membership and check the “Anyone can register”.
Enjoy.
October 19th, 2008 at 8:08 pm
thanks for the info noel.
i’ve checked what u said and i see that my footbg is outside the wrapper.
it seems there’s another problem that preventing the footer from working beautifully.
i’ll try to look again for the mean time.
Thanks

Hey great site, and wordpress theme. I really like the drop down log in? How did you do that, and what would I take from your theme to add it to mine. THANKS
November 7th, 2008 at 5:20 pm
Hi Jason,
Glad you like the theme. To get the sliding panel, I followed this tutorial. For registration / login, its from here.
To see how it’s done, you should look at header.php, line 58 - 82. Do note that you got to go to your dashboard, Admin > Settings > Membership > and check the “Anyone can register“, in order for this the login and password input box to appear. The rest is CSS styling.
November 13th, 2008 at 2:22 pm
i can add image to article, thumbnail, can u give me a code? where to put?
November 13th, 2008 at 11:49 pm
Hi lonut,
I believe you’re trying to get the thumbnail to work. You can read this tutorial for an overview. You just have to look at the “Adding a Custom Field”.
Over at your own blog
Do note your thumbnail image should be 90px by 90px or proportionate. Hope this is what you’re looking for.
November 14th, 2008 at 5:38 am
yep thx
November 14th, 2008 at 11:37 am
Thanks for the theme,wonderful!
But I cant use it in 2.6.3 Chinese.
Maybe something wrong with my blog.
I am trying to fix.
Can you give me some advises? Thks
November 14th, 2008 at 1:59 pm
Hi youngpearl,
I personally have not tried this theme on a WP 2.6.3, same goes for a chinese install, so I can’t offer much advise to get it working, but the best I can do is try it out on a 2.6.3 english install, at least it rules out one possibilities. Will let you know when done.
In the meantime, if you do get it to work in 2.6.3 chinese, will be glad if you can share it with me.
Regards
Noel
November 14th, 2008 at 11:01 pm
Can you please give it to someone who could make a blogger theme out of it ? Once you do , just mail me and i shall feature it on my blog ! :)
November 15th, 2008 at 3:42 am
Rahul,
It’s free for all, but I think your wait will be much shorter if you just switched to WordPress. : )
November 15th, 2008 at 6:55 am
Hi, I had asked you earlier about putting the drop down log in. As you can see from my site: http://www.organicjar.com everything is fine, except it doesn’t go up or down. What javascript in this theme can I use for that. Any help would be great. THANKS
November 15th, 2008 at 2:35 pm
Jason,
I see that you didn’t miss out anything, so I can only conclude that it may be in conflict with one of your other script. You might want to disable all the other .js to confirm this.
Anyway, I just realized that I pointed you to the wrong article for the original author of this effect. This should be the correct link.
November 17th, 2008 at 3:03 am
hi
i am using wordpress 2.6.3 nad it is not coming out right for some reason or is it not working right my site is http://www.hoque.co.uk
November 17th, 2008 at 9:46 am
@hoque
Your footer is not displayed because you did not activate the flickrss plugin.
Also, you should download the Version 1.1 over here to replace the “old” theme. It has auto thumbnail generation, which will save you a ton of your time.
November 17th, 2008 at 12:17 pm
¡Awesome! Congratulations for a great work. Thanks for releasing this for free =).
November 17th, 2008 at 4:16 pm
Oh bugger…..I spent so many hours yesterday to use the auto thumbnail to work just as you did and finally was able to do it. If I would have visited your site I could’ve saved my time. :)
Anyway, thank you for a wonderful theme and most importantly the one which according to me is best suited to my site ;)

I now have two more problem which i hope you can solve for me.
My First Problem is the featured post i cant seam to get that to work i have done all you said and it still dont work can you see what i am doing wrong.
And my other problem is getting the flicker rss to work it dont seam to work am i ment to put in a code there or something.
Thank you so much for you help
November 18th, 2008 at 9:57 pm
@gpardoca & Hamid
Thanks for your compliment. Appreciate it.
@hoque
For the featured post to work, you need to edit gallery.php and change to showposts=5&cat=5
In this case, it will show the latest 5 post from your “work” category.
For the flickrss, after activating, you need to setup the plugin through the admin backend. Go to “Settings” > “flickrRSS” and input the relevant details, showing 10 square pictures.
November 18th, 2008 at 11:17 pm
Hi Noel,
a couple of issues here:
- fresh install the them, it loads headers but stops before the first post saying “call to undefined function get_image_link()…”
- the gallery works in home page but when you click on a post gallery does not work anymore (text is there, picture is misisng).
How can I fix it?
Thanks
November 19th, 2008 at 5:39 am

Neo plz help me on future post image i don’t see there image.
see tme my site and solve my problum
November 19th, 2008 at 10:33 pm
@cattivt
I really have no idea how this could be happening, and I noticed you are using the version which from blogohblog. I suggest you download the version 1.1 from here and try again. If it persist, it is really beyond me because it is working for others. You may get more help from the original author of this feature.
@hoque
It’s done! You didn’t define any custom key for the featured content gallery as mentioned in point number 4 in the above article.
@Goss
Most probably you did not define the gallery_image for your feature post, refer to this screenshot. Basically, all post you wanna show in the featured content must contain the gallery_image custom field. I too realize that you’re using a version from blogohblog, so you might want to consider the download offered here.
November 20th, 2008 at 6:20 am
Hey Noel
Thank for your help really app it your a true legend

Hi Noel

November 21st, 2008 at 3:29 am
H Noel
i managed to fix the problem with the flicker rss but i just have one final problem and after that i promise i wont hassel you no more my last problem is how do i get a thumbnail of image next to each of my post like you do.
thanks
November 21st, 2008 at 8:23 pm
@hoque
If you have not made any edit to the index.php, the image thumbnail should appear automatically if you “add media” through wordpress when you are posting. It will take the first image in your post. Alternatively, you can create a custom field key “Image” like how you did the featured content and this image will appear as a thumbnail. Refer to this example.
If you can’t get it to work, I suggest you download and overwrite your template files and start again. The thumbnail will definitely appear. If you got anymore problems, do feel free to ask. I understand the anguish of not getting things appear “right”.
By the way, you really should get a gravatar.
November 21st, 2008 at 9:47 pm
oh man, i can tell you that I’ve tried everything in my power to make the featured post function work. when you finally find a theme that rocks, it really frustrates when you are able to make it work. I’ve read and followed the instructions by catswhocode, but believe, i can’t get it to work. all of the other features are OK, but this one. I know you got plenty to do and a lot of people asking for your advice, but if you find the time and will, please advise. a little help would do me good.
thanks in advance,
sid.
November 21st, 2008 at 10:02 pm
@Sid
I don’t know what’s the problem you’re facing, but If you really tried everything and it still doesn’t work, then try to disable other plugins, or remove any other reference of javascript from the header manually, as there may be conflicts with another javascript.
Often, getting some sleep, start on a brand new fresh vanilla install with sole purpose of testing out the featured content will at least “convince” yourself that you are following the instructions correctly and it works. I am not a coder, so that’s all I can advise. But this often solve most of my problems.
November 21st, 2008 at 10:06 pm
i’ll try that, thanks :)
November 22nd, 2008 at 2:53 am

Thanks for you help reall app it
@Everyone
anyone know how do i add contact me page on my blog
November 22nd, 2008 at 5:56 am
Hi
sorry for keep on bugging you but how do i put a logo in the header
regards
November 22nd, 2008 at 8:20 pm
@hoque
For adding a contact me page, you should try the cforms plugin. The plugin might look a bit overwhelming at first, but just take your time and read the instructions. As for how to put a logo in the header, it’s really about HTML and CSS. But for a start, you can look into <a href=”link to somewhere”><img src=”path to your image file”></a> This will display a clickable image link to where you want it. If you’re totally new, you’re going to have problem no doubt, so maybe words will do just fine.

How to make a page of albums like your website?
November 26th, 2008 at 12:27 am
How about the slogan ? How can you make it appear on the blog ?
November 27th, 2008 at 8:44 pm
@hadi
It is done with Flickr Photo Album Plugin.
@ Ariane
you have to add this line
<?php bloginfo(’description’); ?>
to where you want the slogan to appear
November 28th, 2008 at 9:53 am
I’m not sure, but i think i’ve got a problem.
I don’t know why, but when i enter to a post or a page, the title on the web browser remains as if i’m on the index.
PS: So sorry for my bad english…
November 28th, 2008 at 11:36 am
@gpardoca
You should try out the All in One SEO Pack. That’s what I use for my site too. Can I also check what plugin you’re using for your tag cloud? Looks cool. Thanks.
November 28th, 2008 at 9:52 pm
Hi Noel
Is this theme compatable with the new wordpress 6.2.5
Regards
November 28th, 2008 at 11:29 pm
this theme is just what i needed, clean, sleek, flickr, twitter, plus that slideshow thing on the top right is off the chain
November 29th, 2008 at 11:11 am
That tag cloud plugin that gpardoca is using is called <a href=”http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wp-cumulus/”>WP-Cumulus</a>. I wonder how did he replace the existing tag cloud with it. I wanted to do that.
November 29th, 2008 at 11:16 am
sorry bout that last post, my anchor text game sucks, that plugin is called WP-Cumulus for the 3D tag cloud. I would love to learn how to replace the existing tag cloud, anybody know
November 29th, 2008 at 11:45 am
@ Noel
I’m not sure if you understand my problem: If i’m on the index, the title on the web browser is “El Rey Del Dominó“. And if i’m on a page or post, the title remains as “El Rey Del Dominó“, and doesn’t change to “PostTitle | El Rey Del Dominó“. Is it clear? It’s hard to me to make myself clear in english… I’m not that good at it =P.
The Tag Cloud is made by “WP Cumulus“.
November 29th, 2008 at 10:48 pm
@gpardoca
I know exactly what you mean, and I have no idea what could be causing that. That’s why i suggest you use the All in One SEO pack which will allow you to set a custom “window title” for each post, rather than take what wordpress gives it.
@getondaground
Glad you like the theme, as for how to replace the existing tag cloud, first download the activate the WP Cumulus plugin. Then from the theme folder, look for sidebar.php, find:
<div class=“tabbertab”>
<h2>Tag Cloud</h2>
<ul>blah blah blah</ul>
</div>
change to:
<div class=“tabbertab”>
<h2>Tag Cloud</h2>
<?php wp_cumulus_insert(); ?></div>
I haven’t tried it yet, but this should work.
November 30th, 2008 at 2:59 am
thanks, i got that tag cloud plugin working finally, a few more questions
1. for the featured post slideshow thing on the top, does the picture have to be a certain size for it work? I know the thumbnails have to be 90×90 for the regular post.
2. How did you get you photo gallary to look so clean? mines is a mess. Is there a certain page template i need to use?
3. I did everything you said in your post about lightbox & flickrss. It’s still not working. is it something I missed?
If you can just point me in the right direction, would be helpful, thanks.

how did u manage to get yr flash tag cloud working i cant seem to get mine to work
November 30th, 2008 at 7:06 am
Ooooh!! So sorry. I’ll try that =P. Thanks for the patience!
November 30th, 2008 at 7:07 am
@hoque.co.uk
First download the activate the WP Cumulus plugin. Then from the theme folder, look for sidebar.php, find:
<div class=“tabbertab”>
<h2>Tag Cloud</h2>
<ul>blah blah blah</ul>
</div>
change to:
<div class=“tabbertab”>
<h2>Tag Cloud</h2>
<?php wp_cumulus_insert(); ?></div>
Then go to settings>wp cumulus in your admin panel to make changes there, not in widgets section. Make sure you put a check in box next to “Distribute tags evenly on sphere” so you can see your tag cloud on your website first, then once you get the size right, then you can change the background color if you choose. The size I used 332w X 249h
Let me know how it goes. I’ll need you to help me with the featured gallary slideshow picture size. I can’t figure it out. I know it must be a certain size.
November 30th, 2008 at 7:12 am
A thousand thanks… No… Two thousand thanks!
November 30th, 2008 at 8:13 pm
thanks getondaground mine is working

Can’t seem to nudge the header up. See site at http://www.how-to-learn-guitar.com/
Appreciate any help I can get.
Thank you!

Another Problem: I was using “statement” before digital statement, this new theme (for me) wont display the title on individual post pages like it used to in statement, digital statement is doing something to prevent this, I tried switching back to statement and wha la, the story titles are displayed on top of the browser like they should be, then switched back to digital statement and the same thing, it just displays the same site description on all pages as the title, I cant help but notice that you dont have this problem here……….. any suggestions?…….. I even tried using the all in one seo plugin to no avail….. any ideas?

Please advice.

You open up either footer.php or comments.php and look for noel0208@gmail and replace it with your admin email address.
@ Everyone else
I am on a new job, starting a part-time degree program, and have a 5 month old baby, so sorry for not being able to test this out in 2.7 If you’ve managed to get it working for 2.7, do get in touch with me and I will host it for sharing. Take and Give, that’s what the web is all about……
February 6th, 2009 at 10:51 am
Hi, I am testing Digital Statement on a subsite, and everything seemed to work fine, until I added a new post. Then all of the body disappears and I can only see the header and the top navigation menu.
No one else seems to be having this problem, so I’m a little stumped if I’m doing something wrong. I had no problem with the earlier version of this template on 2.7.
February 6th, 2009 at 10:59 am
Oops, please ignore my previous comment. Realised that my ‘Get The Image’ plugin wasn’t activated. Once that was done, everything worked like a charm!

Hi Ljrichar
How did you manage the SmoothGallery images with out overflowing ?
When ever I load the page all the images in the smoothGallery is overflowing.
What to do to fix it. pls help
thank you.
February 18th, 2009 at 7:58 am
@Harry
Do you mean when you first load the page when the images are bigger than the smoothgallery box? I still get that problem depending on load times. The only thing I could think of that may be helping is that I have WP Super Cache running. If you mean something else, let me know.
February 22nd, 2009 at 5:44 pm
@Ijrichar
Yes you are right. When the page is loaded the images are bigger than the smoothgallery box and come out of the box.
You visit my site http://www.blooglespot.com you will get to know the problem.
February 23rd, 2009 at 7:10 am
Hi Noel,
Very good theme, congratulations.
Can you tell me how to turn the original Post Thumbnail dynamic? I see in the Main Index Table the following code:
<?php echo get_the_image_link(array(’Image’),’thumbnail’,'http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2375/1618662359_14434cb18d_s.jpg’); ?>–><!– Enter the full path to your image –>
The idea is that this URL is dynamic, per post, right? I’ve created a custom field called “thumbnail” for each post, on which I define the thumb.
What changes must be done in the code above?
Anyone knows how do I achieve this?
Thanks a lot in advance.

February 28th, 2009 at 3:41 am
hi, i like the theme and have one problem resolved:
if there is no image posted in the custom-field and you want to show one on the side cause you do not want to fix hundreds of posts, try to change the index.php on line 21 like this:
<code>
<span class=”custom_image”>
<?php
$values = get_post_custom_values(”image”); // set the img custom name
if (isset($values[0])) { // if there’s a img in my custom field
?>
<a href=”<?php the_permalink() ?>” rel=”bookmark” title=”<?php the_title_attribute(); ?>”><img src=”<?php $values = get_post_custom_values(”image”); echo $values[0]; ?>” title=”<?php the_title(); ?>”/></a>
<?php } // end if statement
// if there’s no img do replace it with no-img
else { ?>
<a href=”<?php the_permalink() ?>” rel=”bookmark” title=”Read the rest of <?php the_title_attribute(); ?>”><img src=”<?php bloginfo(’stylesheet_directory’); ?>/images/no-img.gif” title=”<?php the_title(); ?>”/></a>
<?php } ?>
</span></code>
if the code above is not showing try: http://wordpress.org/support/topic/201109?replies=4
heavy thx!
March 3rd, 2009 at 11:51 pm
I am trying to get the thumbnails working to no avail. I understand they are 90×90 pixel in size, and that you create a custom field called image within the post, and link it to the url.
This does not work.
Also how does the smoothwall gallery images work, I understand they have a custom field of gallery_image, and again linked to a url

I don’t know of any solid fix. That being said, getting any unneeded code out of your header.php file, using WP Super Cache & sizing the images to the SmoothGallery box size listed in Digital Statement\js\smoothgallery\css\jd.gallery.css should help. If you have a fast load time, you won’t see the pics in the wrong place.
@Antonio
“I’ve created a custom field called “thumbnail” for each post, on which I define the thumb.”
The custom field should be called “Image.”
“What changes must be done in the code above?”
Change the address to the pic you want by default when you have no “Image” field specified for that post.
@Joseph
Not sure why it wouldn’t be working w/o more info. Try “Image” instead of “image”. As far as SG goes, follow the tutorial to a tee and it will work.

Hi Noel,
Hope you know how you helped so many people with understanding of things they dont use every day :). I’ve also found your theme in the web and I also like it and all the already prepared plugins. I know how much work is there behind!
Sadly I’ve also some trubles with the Featured Post picture (thumbnail). If you check my current blog -> http://www.anactivesite.ch/blog/ you will see that the thumbnail (original picture) is loading it self but no picture is visible after loading.
Its really strange to me because I’ve defined everything you told. Do you now that problem?
Kind regards from switzerland

I’m using 2.7 and everything seems to be working as it should in FF but having some issues with IE(using 7) AND since most of our patrons are still using IE (go figure) I need to make some tweaks. The auto subcat menu under the category menu is not lining up but stepping down … any clues on how to fix this?

Partically solved it:
#nav li, {float: left;list-style:none} - I added #subnav li to it and now it works properly with some minor issues of margins.

How are some of you customizing your Logo? I can’t seem to get the image to show up. Do you know the code for the header to customize the logo? @ljrichar is really the look i’m going for. The customized feel looks great with this theme.
Thanks!
