pfingoMOBILE
I introduced the service pfingo not too long ago, and subsequently talked about its companion desktop application pfingoDESKTOP. Today, we will be taking an in depth look at its mobile client, pfingoMOBILE.

download and install the mobile client
To download the client, you have to head over to http://www.pfingo.com and log into your account.

Once you’re logged in, click on “pfingoMOBILE”.

Download the “pfingoMOBILE client”. For the “pfingo Outlook plugin”, if you’re not sure what this is, I suggest you leave it alone.

Select the model of your phone.

Enter your mobile phone number. A download link will be sent to your phone. Take note you will need an Internet connection to download the client.
SETUP AND CONFIGURATION
The pfingoMOBILE client on your phone comes with several functionality. However Before you can start using all the functions, there are several which will need to be configured through the web interface.

Go back to pfingoMOBILE on your PC, and you will see “Push Mail”, “Push News”, and “Push Stocks”. These are the components which have to be configured through the web interface.

“Push Mail” allows you configure any email account that allows POP3 access to be pushed to your pfingoMOBILE client.

“Push News” is simply just RSS feeds. If you have no idea what RSS is, read this, otherwise, its pretty straight forward.

For any traders, this should look familiar, otherwise, just skip this.

“Personalise” allows you to select only services which you need to appear on your pfingoMOBILE client. Whatever you don’t need or use, just uncheck it.

Once you’ve downloaded and installed the application, go ahead and start the client.

Click on “Go Online“

The username and password is the same as what you used to login at the pfingo website.

There are several icons representing the services available to you. We will run through it quickly.

The chat interface is simple, and allows for popular chat protocols from MSN, Yahoo, and Google.

Sending a SMS with your pfingo account on your phone is easy. GREAT!

Contacts will be useful if you’ve never backup your contact details. You can choose to import from phone, and your contacts will synced to your pfingo account.

Back at the main screen, by clicking on personalize, you can choose to disable services which you do not need by unchecking the tickbox.
conclusion
pfingoMOBILE provides one critical function, and that is the sending of SMS. As far as I am concern, this is the only VOIP solution which allows for the sending of SMS through your mobile handset. Besides, since the installer is based on Java, it will run on most modern phone, and will complement the SIP functionality to offer a complete voice and sms package, without a need for a service contract. Personally, I don’t believe it will ever replace my pre-paid mobile line, however, its the PERFECT for use as a residential line with my Nokia E51……
