Introducing Social Bookmarking

May 11th, 2008 | 1 Comment | Posted in Web

One of the pioneers of Web2.0 is del.icio.us, and since then, they have been acquired by Yahoo. So what’s their business? To put it simply, they provide you a central repository to store your bookmarks, and offer a intuitive way to categorize them by “tagging”. The social element comes in when your bookmark are automatically shared with other del.icio.us users, potentially returning better search results from their site.

So with social bookmarking, you get:

  • 1 set of bookmarks / favorites, regardless of which computer you are on
  • Never worry about losing your bookmarks / favorites when recovering from a system crash
  • Get more relevant search results, and contribute to organizing of the World Wide Web
  • Its fun. Discover “gems” which others have found.

Its totally free and I can’t think of any reason for you to not use it.

Install Buttons

The installation process should have automatically asked you to install “buttons” extension / add-on. If you have followed through, and done everything, you can start bookmarking. Here are some preview screenshots.

If you skipped the button installation, you can still get your buttons installed for IE here.

For the rest of the browsers such as Firefox, Safari and Opera etc, I believe if you’re savvy enough to be not on IE, del.icio.us should be a piece of cake. If you really face problems, here’s the link to everything you need.
