Photo resize for Dummies

May 6th, 2008 | No Comments | Posted in Application

Upgrading to a new camera? Eyeing the latest 10 or 12 megapixels offerings? Bet you never though about how you’re going to store and share these extra megabytes. Are you sick of receiving 6mb email containing the latest holiday pictures, or 50mb Powerpoint presentations? Worse still, are you one of the culprits? Bigger is better, the higher the resolution, the more details captured in your picture. However, leave these pictures for your personal enjoyment. When it comes to sharing pictures, small file size is the way to go due to the following reason:

  • No more waiting for an eternity for your picture to finish uploading
  • Increased view count from your audience due to faster loading
  • Save space and carry more with your portable storage
  • Fits on the screen without need for scrolling

There are many ways to do this and I like to keep it simple, as simple as right clicking and selecting the right size. And there are two free tools to do this.

Microsoft PowerToys for Windows XP - Image resizer

As the name suggest, this a endorsed tool by Microsoft and works on WIN XP. Download here. Installation is dead simple just double click and install. Once done, next time you want to email or insert your pictures into the docs, just right click the selected picture and choose “Resize Pictures” and you will be brought to a dialogue box asking you to choose a size “Small, Medium or Large”. Clicking “Ok” w ill create a copy of the picture you selected in the size you specify. Now you can share you photos with the world and be assured that it will be seen.

Official guide located here if you’re interested. But its really simple to use and they should be no reason you don’t install this.

vso image resizer - windows vista

If you’re on Vista, fret not. There is also an excellent freeware VSO Image Resizer which can be downloaded here. Its works on Windows XP as well and offers more advance options should you need them.

Hope you find this helpful, and actually practice this basic “etiquette” when sharing docs / pictures.
