ASUS Eee PC900 vs ECS G10IL
What’s the fuss about? Its the war of the low cost ultra portable. I held off buying the original Asus Eee PC largely due to its mediocre 7″ screen, which I doubt can be used for any serious work, not to mention the “shrunk” keyboard. Well, lucky me, because these two models will make the folks who bought the original Eee list them on Ebay……

The pictures above shows the physical comparison between the two, noting much to give away, except that I like the hinge design of the G10IL.
Specifications wise, the Eee PC 900 have yet to go official, but looking at the spec of the G10IL, it definitely got the upper hand. So which will I go for? With all the information right now, its definitely the ECS G10IL. But it is dependant on 1 ultimate factor. PRICE.
Let us not forget how the whole Eee PC phenomenon started. Its the availability of a ultra portable at USD 299. However with each competing model, they are adding more features, driving the price up. This just dilutes their first mover advantage, but more importantly they are moving away from the low cost ultra portable market segment they help define and which the Eee is synonymous with. If they remain in the low cost segment, I doubt the likes of Acer, HP, and Dell will want to enter this market, as it will cannibalize their own low cost offering. However , if the Eee prices goes up to USD 500 to USD 600, these big players will jump into the market, and with their volume, I doubt Asus can withstand this competition.
I just hope ASUS realizes this and keep to its original idea, which is to produce a cheap, portable laptop for basic work and play. So for all I like about the ECS G10IL, if its going to sell for SGD $1199 or SGD$1299, I might as well for a Compaq / HP. As for the Eee PC 900, if it keeps true to the promise of USD$399, around SGD$800, then the price is just about right. But if any of these models crosses the $900 mark, maybe I can live with a 7″ screen and mini keyboard after all……
