Was grabbed by the article headline “Web 2.0 Experts Share Tips” You can read the full article by clicking the headline.

However what intrigues me is the following excerpt

She also told attendees to focus first on creating a truly compelling application that captures people’s attention, and not worry too much about a business plan. “The most important thing is to build [an application] that people really want to use,” she said. “[A great business model] doesn’t matter if no one cares about your product.”

This is a statement coming from the co-founder of Remember the Milk, and it has set me thinking about the state of the Web 2.0 developments. If you are familiar with GTD ideology, you must have heard of RTM. However, have you tried using this web app?
I can see the benefits of the system, but it hit me hard when I tried to convince the people around me about the benefits of these GTD apps. Acquaintance will politely acknowledge your “kindness” but you KNOW they think you are just a geek. Which leads us to our close friends and relatives: “Why the hassle?”, “Are you really so free?”

You know you heard this before, but the sad truth is the average user just don’t care about things like RTM, because they can simply can get things done the traditional way.

Which leads us to the next point, will you pay to use a service such as RTM? I for one MIGHT consider it, but at this point in time its a straight NO. To cut the long story short, I am afraid the current Web 2.0 trend is noting more than a “geeks toy” as there exist no sustainable business model in many of the of these Web 2.0 startup, except for advertisements. (for a reality check, visit RTM paid services)

So ask ourselves this questions, will Remember the Milk still be around come 2012? In its free form maybe, but as a business? I guess we all know the answer, so let’s enjoy the dream while we can…
